abba

One of my favorite worship songs is called "Abba." No I'm not talking about the band associated with "Mamma Mia" or "Dancing Queen," I'm talking about this really simple worship song by Jonathan David Helser and Melissa Helser. The lyrics of the chorus, which are repeated throughout the song are as follows:

"Abba, I belong to you."

That's all he sings. Just "Abba, I belong to you."

vast beach

The concept of belonging someone, (I talk about this a little bit in my "freedom in christ" post,) is a little peculiar since it's written throughout the Bible that we're supposed to have freedom in Christ, but if once you've read my previously mentioned post, this might make a little bit more sense.

When this is sung, you're saying that you're giving yourself to God. That you're surrendering. That you're letting go of whatever plans you have made for yourself, and letting God follow through with his plans, which are WAY GREATER than anything you could plan for yourself. You're giving yourself to Jesus. It's awesome. But the main focus of my post today is the word "Abba."

Abba can be translated to father.

I know that sometimes that can be a heavy topic for some of y'all to hear because maybe father brings up things that you'd rather keep hidden away. Maybe it isn't a harsh topic and maybe it it's relieving for you to hear. Either way, the direct translation is father and there's something so beautiful about that, whether you have an earthly father or not.

“I will be a Father to you and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty.”

Just this verse alone paints a picture of what He looks like as the father. God makes us his sons and daughters without us having to do ANYTHING. And what's important to remember is that this isn't submission or tolerance. God isn't saying, "Eh, they're okay, I'll take 'em." He wants you. Because he made you. In his image.

As children, we look often look like our parents because we are made from them. God though? He molded you. He created you before your momma even knew she was gonna give birth. He's loved you longer than you've been alive and will continue to love you until heaven and beyond. You are made beautifully and THAT's in the image of God.

I just think that that's wild. With that said, prepare yourself for my last devotional post, it'll be up in a few days (or maybe tomorrow if I can get my ish together) because (sneak peek!) it's all about YHWH and what that means.

Much Love,

Delaney Miller
